Benicia is home to painters, sculptors, photographers, wood turners, illustrators, metal smiths, ceramicists, jewelry designers and other artists, with studios scattered throughout the city, but primarily concentrated in Benicia’s intriguing Arsenal arts district.
Traveling to the Benicia Arsenal is much like falling into the White Rabbit’s hole. The Wonderland Adventure begins by passing through large wrought iron gates and taking several forks and bends in the road until the waterfront district of the Arsenal is before you. This area holds mystery and edginess with a mix of history and industry. Artists share space with galleries, event facilities, antique and furniture stores, manufacturers, and an active port. The buildings range from historic to converted factory plants.Christina Strawbridge
The Arsenal’s twice-yearly Open Studios events (May and December) are second-to-none, in part due to the Arsenal’s nearly 80 artists being concentrated into a relatively small, walkable area. In contrast to most open studios events, visitors are able to park their cars and walk to dozens of artist studios, making it possible to see much more art than at other similar events.
