Open Studios shows why Benicia is the Bay Area’s most artful town. With more than 90 artists showcasing their work, collectors and enthusiasts will be flocking to this two-day invitation to get up close and personal with the artists themselves.
Arts Benicia Executive Director, Celeste Smeland shares, “It’s a free, fun and festive event that is all about art and community. Open Studios really allows the artists to shine in their own environment, which is a wonderful opportunity for visiting guests.”
From April 21 to May 6, Arts Benicia will be exhibiting a preview show for participating artists in its own gallery located at 991 Tyler Street, Suite 114, in Benicia’s historic Arsenal District. This is a great chance for serious art lovers to get a glimpse into a variety of styles and mediums. They can plan their weekend around spending time with the artists they’d like to get to know better.
About a week in advance, an official Open Studios catalog will be available for visitors to use during the event to navigate the many participating galleries, shops and studios. Each artist will be included in a map so you can find the ones you’re looking for. The catalog will also provide beautiful photographs of the art to help guests find what they’re drawn to, and possibly want to purchase as a lovely keepsake. You can pick up a catalog at the Arts Benicia Gallery.
During the main event, visitors are invited to peruse individual artist studios located within the Arsenal on Jackson and Tyler streets and in private homes around town. The weekend will be filled with incredible opportunities to see where the artists work, create, and in some cases, live. Some of the studios and shops around town will host multiple artists to give every participant the chance to showcase their talents.
And the array of talent is extensive this year. Expect to see coveted work from Mike Kendall, Arthur Stern, and Mark Eanes to name just a few. Art fans will discover unique expressions in the form of paintings, sculptures, jewelry, multi-media, metal and more. Benicia’s incredible glass blowing studio, Lindsay Art Glass, will also provide a chance to see the process in action.
As you make your way through Benicia, enjoy a delicious lunch or dinner at one of downtown’s incredible eateries. Benicia is rife with eclectic bars and restaurants on First Street and within walking distance of downtown. You can find a complete list of restaurants, shops and bars at visitbenicia.org.
Parking and admission for Open Studios 2018 are free, and Soltrans will be providing complimentary shuttle transportation between Benicia’s historic Arsenal District and downtown. The event hours will be Saturday, May 5, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, May 6, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
